Sunday of the Prodigal Son

Venerable Basil the Confessor
Tone 6

Readings

  • 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

  • Luke 15:11-32

Hymns

Troparion (Tone 6)

The Angelic Powers were at Thy tomb; the guards became as dead men. Mary stood by Thy grave, seeking Thy most pure body. Thou didst capture hell not being tempted by it. Thou didst come to the Virgin, granting life. O Lord, Who didst rise from the dead, glory to Thee.

Kontakion (Tone 3)

I have recklessly forgotten Thy glory, O Father; and among sinners I have scattered the riches which Thou gavest me. And now I cry to Thee as the Prodigal: “I have sinned before Thee, O merciful Father; receive me as a penitent, and make me as one of Thy hired servants!”

Sunday of the Publican & the Pharisee

Beginning of the Lenten Triodion

Tone 5

Readings

  • 2 Timothy 3:10-15
  • Luke 18:10-14

Hymns

Troparion (Tone 5)

Let us, the faithful, praise and worship the Word, co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born for our salvation from the Virgin; for He willed to be lifted up on the Cross in the flesh, to endure death, and to raise the dead by His glorious Resurrection.

Kontakion (Tone 4)

Let us flee from the pride of the Pharisee! Let us learn humility from the Publican's tears! Let us cry to our Savior: “Have mercy on us, O only merciful One!”

36th Sunday after Pentecost

Afterfeast of the Meeting of the Lord;
St Parthenius, Bishop of Lampsacus;
Venerable Luke of Hellas
Tone 3

Readings

  • Timothy 1:15-17

  • Matthew 15:21-28

Hymns

Troparion (Tone 1)

Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, Full of Grace! From thee shone the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God, enlightening those who sat in darkness. Rejoice and be glad, O righteous Elder, thou didst accept in thine arms the Redeemer of our souls, Who grants us the Resurrection!

Kontakion (Tone 1)

By Thy Nativity Thou didst sanctify the Virgin’s womb and didst bless Simeon’s hands, O Christ God. Now Thou hast come and saved us through love. Grant peace to all Orthodox Christians, O only Lover of Man!

Kristos rozhdaetsya! Slav'te ego! Christ is Born! Glorify Him! Christos Gennatai! Doxasate!

Bethlehem has opened Eden: Come, and let us see! We have found joy hidden! Come, and let us take possession of the paradise within the cave. There the unwatered stem has appeared, from which forgiveness blossoms forth! There is found the undug well from which David longed to drink of old, and there the virgin has borne a child, and at once the thirst of Adam and David is made to cease. Therefore let us hasten to this place: since for our sake the eternal God was born as a little child!

Liturgical Information for the Week of Dec 6, 2015

27th Sunday after Pentecost
St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia
Tone 2

Readings

Hebrews 13:17-21; Luke 6:17-23

Hymns

Troparion (Tone 4)

In truth thou wast revealed to thy flock as a rule of faith, an image of humility and a teacher of abstinence; thy humility exalted thee; and thy poverty enriched thee. O Hierarch Father Nicholas, entreat Christ our God that our souls may be saved!

Kontakion (Tone 3)

Thou didst appear as a priest in Myra, O Saint Nicholas, fulfilling the Gospel of Christ, O venerable one; thou didst lay down thy life for thy people and didst rescue the innocent from death. Therefore, thou hast been blest as a great initiate of the grace of God.
